Hot melt glue gun for foam, mattresses and upholstery.
For foam and upholstery over large areas, we'd usually suggest a spray gun: the TR 60 LCD for granulate or the TR 80 LCD for cartridges. Both set glue air and spray air separately and heat the spray air, which professional spraying needs. Upholstery and mattress hot melts also run in the bead guns.
It depends on
- a full area, or lines and dots
- the spray pattern: cobweb, swirl or wide spray
- granulate or cartridge adhesive
- run length
- the adhesive
Which gun?
- Large areas: TR 60 LCD for granulate, or TR 80 LCD for cartridges.
- Lines or dots on smaller parts: a bead gun, chosen as in Help me choose.
Jobs it suits
Mattress foam · flight-case and suitcase inlays · laminating · wide-area bonding.
Mattresses
Pocket-spring mattresses are traditionally bonded with hot melt. The spring pockets are glued to each other with beads along the side, two or three next to each other, so each spring can still move on its own.
What the adhesive has to do:
- stay flexible once set, so the bond follows the movement, but stay firm enough not to let go
- cope with body warmth, about 37 °C
- stay open long enough to flow into the pocket fabric, then set fast, so the mattress can be moved and packed straight away
- not show through light-coloured foam
A hand gun suits samples, repairs and small batches. For several beads in one pass, a multi-hole nozzle lays them side by side (see the nozzle finder). For a continuous line, see hand gun or melter system?
Case and suitcase inserts
Foam inserts for tool cases and suitcases, and padding in shipping packs, are glued with hot melt. The inserts are often PE rigid foam or PU soft foam, cut to fit what they protect, and are often joined by hand.
- For hand work: a hot melt with a long open time gives you time to place the foam, and a soft glue line keeps the joint flexible.
- The cover fabric matters: tell us what covers the foam, and we recommend a hot melt for it.
- Which gun: a bead gun for lines and dots, chosen as in Help me choose; a spray gun for full areas.
Nozzles
- Cobweb #12542, 1.0 mm: standard on the TR 60 LCD and TR 80 LCD.
- Swirl #3292.
- Wide spray, 90° #12554.
Tips for spraying
- Screw the spray cap on by hand only.
- Never switch off the spray air while a spray cap is fitted.
- For dots and lines, first take off the spray cap and fit a dot nozzle, then set the spray air to zero.
Questions.
Can a hand-held glue gun spray?
Yes. The TR 60 LCD sprays granulate hot melt and the TR 80 LCD sprays from cartridges.
Does hot melt work on foam?
There are hot melts made for mattress foam and upholstery. Tell us the foam and the job, and we recommend one.
Which hot melt is used for pocket-spring mattresses?
One that stays flexible once set but firm enough to hold, copes with body warmth, and flows into the pocket fabric. Tell us the fabric and we recommend one.
Can I glue foam inserts for cases by hand?
Yes. Case and suitcase inserts are often joined by hand. A hot melt with a long open time gives you time to place the foam and keeps the joint soft.
Which nozzle gives the widest spray?
The wide spray nozzle #12554, which sprays at 90 degrees. In Reka's demonstration it covers the base of a Euro pallet, 120 × 80 cm.
