Why are there brown flakes in my hot melt glue?

Brown flakes mean the glue has charred. Reka gives two causes: it was heated above its recommended temperature, or kept hot too long, for example through breaks. Set the temperature from the adhesive's datasheet and turn it down during long breaks. Polyamide-based glues are especially sensitive to this.

Fix it

  • Lower the temperature to the adhesive’s datasheet.
  • A charred gun needs cleaning: ask your adhesive supplier for the right cleaning agent. Reka’s is Dyeclean #2265, available through spares.
  • Never use solvents.

Questions.

Can I clean a charred gun with a solvent?

No. Never use solvents such as acetone, toluene, benzene or turpentine: risk of explosion. Use a cleaning agent made for hot melt.
